ALERT: Hidden Costs of Mall Shopping

pink piggy bank and hand putting coins into the bankHave you ever actually calculated the hidden cost? Consider the hidden costs of your time, gas, wear and tear on your car, not to mention the toll on your mental state? How much time do you think you spend driving to the store for groceries each week? Have you considered how much time is wasted driving around the parking lot looking for that “elusive parking spot”? What does a trip to the mall cost you in time and gas? Do you spend valuable time searching for coupons? Have you missed store savings because you didn’t have the right coupon?

Scenario 1.  Christmas Gift Shopping in a Rainstorm

It’s three days before Christmas. You discover the gift you bought for your favorite aunt is the wrong size and you still have two more gifts to buy. The fun begins you bundle up the kiddies and head to the mall. Now is the time to play “Where’s Waldo” for a parking place. A bitter cold rain is pouring down with a snowstorm predicted for later tonight. Your two little ones begin to show signs of “it’s nap time”. At last, you find a parking spot, even though it’s a mile from the store. Not to be deterred, you trudge inside two unhappy toddlers in tow. All the mall strollers are taken so now you have to carry your youngest and keep a tight grasp on your toddler’s hand. And…you can fill in the rest of this story from past experience.

Scenario 2. The Elusive “Special Outfit” for the boss’s party

The boss’s extravagant party is in two days and Chloe needs a spectacular outfit. After hours of going shop to shop, she spots The To-Die-For outfit, but the store doesn’t have it in her size.  She settles for her second choice, at twice the price.  Next, she spots the pricey, hottest trend kitten heels, that match her new outfit. The sign reads “COUPON SPECIAL Half-Price Today Only. Great sale for anyone who clipped the coupon from yesterday’s flyer. But Chloe never keeps up with coupons. Sound like anyone you might know?

Scenario 3. Household Nightmare

Laundry day is right NOW, today, Friday. The family’s vacation starts tomorrow. All the reservations are made, the beach supplies are packed, the house is clean, and the fridge is full all the kids’ favorite foods for the trip.  The last thing left is to empty those full dirty clothes hampers, wash, dry, fold, and pack. Okay, the first load is in the washer and you just have time for a quick shower. You go back to the laundry room, AUGH…sudsy  water is flowing down the hallway. Oh, no! The old washer has been making loud, weird noises and now it finally died. You remember all those ads for washer dryer sales last week. You were too busy with vacation preparation to be bothered then. Now the sales are over and you are in a real bind.
